Gun Dog Scurry at the Farm

Saturday 28th February 2026

This February, we’re hosting a professionally run dog scurry at Smith’s Farm - the home of Dogs Day Out.

This is a relaxed, working-style event designed to bring dogs and handlers together in a beautiful rural setting.

This scurry is a standalone event, separate from Dogs Day Out itself, but held on the same family farmland that will host the main event later in the year.

It’s a chance to enjoy the space, try something new with your dog, and get a feel for what makes this site special.

What is a scurry?

A scurry is a short, structured challenge inspired by traditional gundog work.

Dogs work one at a time with their handler, completing a simple task based on natural skills such as retrieving, focus, and responsiveness.

While scurries have their roots in working dog training, they are open to all dogs and are adapted to suit different experience levels — from first-timers to seasoned gundogs.

This event is about:

  • Enjoyment and enrichment

  • Calm, purposeful work

  • Positive experiences for dogs and handlers

It is supportive and professionally supervised throughout.

Who is this for?

This scurry is ideal for:

  • Dog owners looking for a well-run, thoughtful setup

  • Owners curious about working-style activities but unsure where to start

  • Dogs who enjoy retrieving, thinking, and being active

  • Anyone who values good dog handling and a respectful environment

You do not need prior scurry or gundog experience.

Guidance will be available on the day, and the scurries will be tailored to suit each dog.

Scurry Pens

WARM UP PEN - for those who may never have scurried before. Let your dog retrieve a standard dummy or bring along their favourite toy instead
Test their recall and find out how much your dog loves the experience.

BASIC LONG RETRIEVE - your dog is timed to fetch a dummy thrown to the back of the enclosure. Pick it up and come back over line in the shortest time possible.

SEEN AND BLIND - two marks are thrown, one is seen by the dog and one is hidden. A large oak tree and longer grass makes this a more challenging experience

ALL FENCED OUT - With logs to jump and long rough grass to navigate through the speed and agility of your dog is being tested.

HUNT & GATHER -  a double blind means two marks are hidden and need to be retrieved without your dog seeing where they land.

WATER RETRIEVE - For the dogs who love to dive in - a straight forward retrieve from the lake - timed of course!

( your dog must have experience of working in water  previously to this event )
